The landscape of relief systems and general process safety management compliance is evolving. This evolution is due in part to the enforcement or potential enforcement of recognized and generally accepted good engineering practices (RAGAGEP). Because of RAGAGEP considerations, oversizing a relief device is no longer acceptable or desirable from an engineering perspective and from a legal liability perspective.
Read this newsletter by Georges Melhem, Ph.D., FAIChE, to learn why dynamics rather than statics is the best practice for necessary mitigation and risk reduction of relief and flare systems. A case study comparing a small site with 100 relief devices, a medium site with 500 devices, and a large site with 1,000 devices illustrates how analysis using dynamics can result in a significant return on investment (ROI).

Bonus! Get access to a 58-minute presentation, Legal Implications of Pressure Relief System Design, by attorney Devon Downs of Farley and Partners LLP for practical advice around pressure relief device RAGAGEP compliance. She will examine trends in OSHA PSM and EPA RMP enforcement of relief systems, including commonly cited provisions and guidelines to minimize the likelihood of enforcement for site-wide relief system studies. Then Ms. Downs will discuss safe discharge location for relief systems, and then close with a case study on one of the revisions of the EPA RMP Rule on PHA RAGAGEP Gap review.
Have a great and safe day.
