Emergency Relief System Revalidation for a PRV System Case Study

 

The Challenge

A 174,000 BPD refinery of a multinational energy company needed to complete an evaluation of a PRV system as part of complying with OSHA 29 CFR 1910.119 PSM standards. A process change that had gone unnoticed by the client had left an upstream heat exchanger unprotected.

Our Approach

The pressure relief system analysis and documentation were prepared using SuperChems™, a component of Process Safety Office®. An initial report was presented to the client for review before proceeding with the calculations. After compiling process flow diagrams, heat and material balances, piping and instrumentation diagrams and other data, ioMosaic analyzed what potential upset conditions could produce overpressure. While conducting the analysis, ioMosaic noticed there had been a process change that had gone unnoticed by the client that left an upstream heat exchanger unprotected. ioMosaic conducted a separate analysis to size a pressure relief device suitable for protecting that separate device.

The Benefits

ioMosaic delivered completed reports with preliminary isometrics and pressure relief valve specification sheets that would enable the client to procure and complete the final design for the pressure relief systems. Our analysis discovered a safety issue in their facility and ioMosaic was able to offer recommendations for protecting that device. The discovery triggered further discussion on evaluating other systems for them.
