Great Switch to Remote Learning Case Study

The Challenge

In the first quarter of 2020 (pre-pandemic), ioMosaic contracted with a multinational chemical company to provide in-person process safety training. ioMosaic initially was asked to provide Incident Investigation training, with additional process safety training courses to follow.

Our process safety training portfolio includes Incident Investigation; however, our client had requested client-specific customization to the course, a standard request we receive from clients. Since this is a large multinational chemical company, they wanted training in multiple locations around the world and training material in multiple languages.

Our original plan was to deliver eight two-day in-person training courses. A limitation of presenting a course in person is that your training venue and the instructor can only manage a finite number of people. The larger the audience, the more difficult it becomes for the instructor to ensure the attention and flow of the course. We capped attendance at twelve people per course for practical reasons. Therefore, a maximum of 96 attendees could be trained.

This contract was awarded pre-pandemic, and we were all set to mobilize and begin training immediately… when the COVID-19 pandemic hit. Everything changed overnight – literally. The client still needed and wanted their training.

Our team immediately pivoted by offering our client a training plan supported by our recently launched eLearning platform, Process Safety Learning® (PSL). This would allow us to offer the requested training to larger groups and still maintain a consistent and quality training program.

Our Approach

Working together with the client, we developed a plan and schedule to provide not only the originally requested training but additional process safety training courses available in multi-languages:

  • Process Hazard Analysis Leadership
  • Incident Investigation
  • Process Safety Management Essentials

On top of offering the above technical course work, we also provided supplemental process safety modules:

  • Risk-based process safety
  • Process safety culture
  • Safety management systems and metrics
  • OSHA inspections

The flexibility of utilizing PSL allowed us to incorporate an extensive overview of process safety concepts to larger groups and in multi-languages and was more cost-effective.

There were certain challenges we needed to keep in mind by changing the training format from in-person to an online alternative such as:

  • Providing access to the training material
  • Being able to verify learner understanding
  • Ensuring all the participants attended
  • Ability to interact with participants
  • Manage the language barrier since it was a multinational audience

The Benefits

Our online training, coupled with virtual workshops, allowed our client to continue business as usual during an unprecedented event when the whole world was basically on lockdown. The training we delivered successfully combined online training with interactive sessions for larger groups spread around the world at a fraction of the cost of in-person training. In addition, training records are stored, accessible, and can easily be maintained going forward within PSL. Training certificates with CEU/PDHs transcripts are also stored and available within the platform. The client was able to train hundreds versus the initial cap of 96 in-person learners. Additional cost savings realized were no travel or accommodation costs or facility downtime.
