The Challenge
A seemingly straightforward request for a facility siting study by a prominent U.S. company in the tire manufacturing industry presented a significant two-pronged challenge.
First, they needed immediate data sent to the client’s architect to ensure that the placement of new on-site buildings would not create facility siting issues. Secondly, a comprehensive
facility siting study
encompassing these new structures was required. This demanded a complex evaluation of individual risks to both on- and off-site populations from potential thermal radiation, toxic, and overpressure hazards, adding another layer of intricate analysis to the project.

Leveraging its deep expertise in process safety, ioMosaic meticulously tackled the facility siting study by employing a rigorous, risk-based approach. Utilizing the advanced capabilities of our

, the team systematically quantified potential hazards and risks. Our methodology involved a detailed estimation of the frequency of potentially hazardous events, coupled with precise consequence modeling to understand the impact of such incidents. By integrating these results with thorough exposure assessments, ioMosaic was able to establish a clear understanding of the potential for injury or fatality.
Our focused objectives underscore our commitment to providing actionable insights:
First, to generate comprehensive individual risk contours for thermal radiation, toxic, and overpressure hazards arising from facility operations.
Second, developing societal risk (FN) curves specifically for on-site personnel exposed to these hazards. Critically, ioMosaic went further to characterize the specific risk incurred by occupants of each existing building and outdoor area, extending this crucial analysis to the planned new occupied building.
This granular data empowered the architect with the necessary information to make informed design and construction decisions. Ultimately, our comprehensive evaluation delivered a robust, risk-based facility siting assessment across all applicable overpressure, thermal radiation, and toxicity hazards, providing a clear pathway for risk minimization.
