Process Safety Management Training Compliance Case Study

The Challenge

An oil & gas company purchased a new facility that had to comply with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) 29 CFR 1910.119 Standard. The facility fell under the scope of the type and quantity of highly hazardous chemicals used, stored, and handled at the site. The client reached out to ioMosaic for a training solution.

To meet OSHA compliance, the company needed to train all employees involved in operating a covered process. Their employees needed to become competent in the processes, emergency procedures, hot work, and management of change, among other areas. They needed a solution that would streamline training for contractors.

The company also wanted to move away from the hassle of manual paperwork and move to an electronic solution. They hoped to simplify the documentation of learner activity and save valuable time.

Our Approach

The Process Safety Learning® platform was the cost-effective approach to meeting compliance more efficiently. Our learning management system ensured that initial training, refresher training, and training documentation were delivered. The system automated everything from registration, enrollment, and course delivery, to detailed record-keeping.

Safety competency is extremely important to prevent injuries and accidental releases of HHCs or other reactions that may lead to incidents. Our learning approach is to offer learning in bits and pieces over time through short training modules, known as learning modules, that learners can complete in 20 minutes or less. The ioMosaic team created custom learning modules specific to the facility’s site and processes. Course materials contained case studies and lessons learned from real incidents. Their course was designed so that training could be updated to meet the company's future safety training needs as they expand.

The Process Safety Learning® platform gave employees round-the-clock access to vital safety information anytime, anywhere, even on mobile devices. They become certified incrementally at their own pace. Furthermore, eLearning promotes continuous, proactive learning so their employees stay safety competent.

The Benefits

As defined by the Standard, workers who handle processes involving highly hazardous chemicals, known as HHCs or flammable material, must be well-trained. The course was developed by process safety experts and industry-recognized ioMosaic leaders. By ensuring their employees are educated about workplace safety, the company can identify workplace hazards before accidents occur and remediate them.

Tracking and managing training became much simpler and more efficient with the Process Safety Learning® platform. The system ensured compliance with record-keeping and also streamlined and optimized training delivery. The company could now easily document what training employees and contractors had received and that they understood the training required. Learners could complete the required initial and refresher training on their own timetable via a desktop or mobile device. The training manager received real-time tracking and records of all training completed.
