Strengthening PSM Competency Case Study

The Challenge

After reviewing their safety performance reports, a global polymer leader recognized that they needed to boost regulatory Process Safety Management (PSM) compliance at particular facilities as well as reinforce company-specific PSM requirements. Management needed a solution that would minimize operational disruptions and could be scalable to other sites and future safety training needs.

When the work-from-home situation grew more prevalent, an emphasis on learning and upskilling became a business priority. The client concluded that expanding their training portfolio was needed to close workforce skill gaps in managing hazards and emergency response, crisis communications, conducting incident investigations; and changes to their internal policies.

Our Approach

Markets and consumers worldwide rely on the client's polymers to manufacture personal care, cleaning goods, paints and coatings, agriculture and food, pharmaceuticals, and building products. They have facilities spread across numerous locations and time zones to meet that demand.

Their training program objective was to strengthen and reinforce workforce core competencies on PSM standards. This would improve safety performance and demonstrate the company's commitment to safety.

Process Safety Learning® (PSL) accommodated the client’s specific, multi-language needs and created courses in the required languages. Our Learning Management System (LMS) supports training via desktop or mobile device. It tracks learners' progress and simplifies program management. Learners absorb material at their own pace and incrementally build competencies at their convenience.

The Benefits

PSL improved learning accessibility for the client’s workforce worldwide. Many managers reported positive improvements in their teams’ attitudes and work habits toward safety for months after using PSL. Staff liked the platform's flexibility and eLearning delivery since it allowed them to establish their own learning pace, helping them absorb the material better. Even after accounting for the client's translation expenses, the solution was more cost-effective than in-person training.

We remain a partner in developing new learning modules and training courses, particularly as PSM standards and their corporate safety policies revise. Our LMS made adding new content and enrolling learners from all their facilities easy. Everything is administered via a single electronic platform.

The need to address skill gaps is more urgent than ever. According to a study conducted by McKinsey & Company, 69% of organizations are doing more skill-building now than they did before 2020. We can help you meet that need.
