Upskilling With eLearning Case Study

The Challenge

Following the pandemic disruption, an American chemical company needed to upskill staff entirely online and turned to ioMosaic for a training solution. The client wanted to minimize downtime as the work-from-home situation intensified by shifting to eLearning.

The company needed to avoid time lost in training sessions for days at a time. The solution had to be easily integrated into daily routines so staff could learn when most convenient. It had to function in the new virtual working environment and make training available from home or the office via desktop or mobile device.

In addition, the client required a centralized system for managing learners and training records electronically to improve efficiency. It was important to remove the headache of filing physical records and keeping up with paper trails.

Our Approach

The Process Safety Learning® platform’s unique learning module approach was well-suited for their needs. Not only did PSL provide flexibility, but it was also adaptable to busy schedules and learning styles, as each learner set the pace. Staff could now attend anytime, anywhere, and train incrementally. Learning sessions were easily incorporated into their workday as training in PSL is organized as modules. Each learning module is dedicated to a single topic and designed to be delivered in a short interval (typically under 30 minutes). Training delivery and learner management also met the client’s criteria, as our learning management system (LMS) supports all aspects of learning and administration from a single electronic platform.

ioMosaic was contracted to provide pressure relief and flare system design training. We also developed a custom course to accommodate various experience levels of engineering and operations staff. ioMosaic experts are skilled at delivering technical training content targeted to different experience levels. This course needed the right balance of delivering an overview of concepts and also an advanced methodology to enrich learner skill sets. Learning was enhanced with real-life case studies and lessons learned from historical incidents. Each prerecorded video module could be paused or replayed as needed by the learner, and every module concluded with an assessment designed to reinforce key learnings.

Initially, the training was utilized to upskill current staff, and it worked particularly effectively as a refresher to polish knowledge. The client quickly understood that this course would also benefit those who were new to pressure relief scenarios. Even some management roles could benefit from a better understanding of the subject. With a few clicks of a button, their Training Manager was able to enroll many more teams in the training and stay informed of their competency status at a glance through an analytics dashboard.

The Benefits

The client saw eLearning as a win-win solution because downtime could be used to upskill current experienced staff while also investing in the future careers of their new hires. Additional feedback indicated that staff viewed the training as a bonus to their professional development, the real value add. Between 10 and 20 percent of their workforce at different specific locations took part in the training, a positive sign of staff interest and engagement.

Overall, PSL was effective in bolstering team knowledge to meet daily work responsibilities and increase safety awareness. The company could pursue its productivity goals by offering staff training on demand. Managing training records was seamless, and PSL’s automatic tracking of progression and completion saved the client time and money.
