This presentation, by Georges A. Melhem, Ph.D., FAIChE, provides an overview of the ARC and APTAC calorimeters and how measured data can help with process safety and optimization. Examples are provided to illustrate how ARC/APTAC data can be used for the estimation of physical properties, vapor/liquid equilibrium, reaction rates, and the development of kinetic models. These kinetic models can be used for the evaluation and design of emergency relief and vent containment systems during process upsets leading to runaway reactions. In addition, rate expression derived from ARC/APTAC data can be used to develop time to maximum rate curves, self-accelerating reaction temperatures, and a variety of additional useful thermal stability indicators.
