Process safety incidents have occurred when management ignored procedures in order to get on with the job, or to control costs. In 2022 alone, OSHA issued 430 citations for failing to comply with regulations to oil refineries, chemical plants, water and sewage treatment operations, and other facilities that use hazardous chemicals. Is it due to ignorance or a lack of awareness? Or is it due to negligence or carelessness?
When effectively executed, process safety helps ensure dependable processes that can produce high-quality products, on time, and at a lower cost. Such safety enhancements enable the companies that adopt them to maintain value creation over the long term. Without properly planned and implemented process safety management (PSM) programs, the risk of a crisis is high.
Join us on Thursday, September 4, 2025, from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm CST, for this live instructor-led course that empowers learners with the knowledge needed to develop or improve PSM programs. All 14 process safety elements of the OSHA regulation 29 CFR 1910.119 for Process Safety Management (PSM) will be examined individually and include best practices. Each element will work in tandem with the others to build an effective PSM system. The benefits of applying the Center for Chemical Process Safety (CCPS) 20-element approach to Risk-Based Process Safety (RBPS) will also be explained. Case studies, lessons learned, and practical examples are incorporated throughout the course to demonstrate principles and enrich learning.
Taught by Pamela Nelson, CCPSC, she is a Certified Process Safety Professional with more than 30 years of chemical process industry experience, and over 25 years of experience in process safety and health, and safety and environment (HSE) management. Ms. Nelson is a recognized expert who has implemented compliance and process management initiatives for facilities across the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Thailand, China, and the U.K. Her paper, Denials Delusions and Bias, published in Process Safety Progress, illustrates the concept of human bias and how it can affect the ability to adequately assess risk at a facility.
The course is conducted in a one day session delivered live via Microsoft Teams in a safe, dynamic learning environment on Thursday, September 4, 2025 9:00 am – 2:00 pm CST.
Once the course is successfully completed attendees are eligible to receive a 20% discount on Process Safety Office® PSMPro™ purchase. Restrictions apply.
This course is ideally suited for anyone working for or associated with the process industries such as, chemical, oil and gas, pharmaceutical industries, particularly those involved in safety and risk management. It also serves as a valuable refresher for site managers, experienced safety professionals, and process engineers seeking assistance in improving an existing PSM program.
To ensure a smooth Microsoft Teams session, you will need a reliable and stable internet connection with sufficient bandwidth, ideally achieved by using a wired Ethernet connection instead of Wi-Fi whenever possible.
